MELANIE

We somehow managed to get out of Kimmy’s place and away without anyone following us.

There was a good five minutes of driving where I kept looking in the mirrors, waiting to see a set of headlights following close behind us.

The sudden burst of anxiety and adrenaline killed most of my buzz.

Add to that the complete silence Neo and I were in, making the drive not an enjoyable one at all.

“So Kimmy is the same,” Neo said. “Minus the new tits.”

“I don’t want to talk about Kimmy,” I said. “Or her new tits.”

“Jealous?”

“Of what?” I asked. “Her tits? No. I’m very happy with my chest. I don’t need to change a thing.”

“Something we agree on then,” Neo said.

“You know what? Stop that too. Stop talking about me like that. Like you know me. I get it, Neo. We were together. We had sex. We were in love. Okay? Fine. You don’t have to bring it up all the time.”

“Are you sure about that?” Neo asked. “Maybe I bring it up because it was the last time I was actually happy.”

“Bullshit,” I said. “You’re a rock star. You’re rich. You play shows to tens of thousands of fans. Look what just happened in Kimmy’s place. You’re signing boobs and you have people chasing you around.”

“All I can think about is how much you hate me.”

I looked at him. “Really?”

“Yes, really,” I said.

“What do you want then? Want me to lie?”

“No,” Neo said. “I think you’re handling enough lies as it is.”

“Excuse me?” I asked, rage bubbling from deep inside my core.

“Come on, Melanie,” he said. “The ring? The life? This is what you want?”

“Who the fuck-”

“You wouldn’t have come back,” Neo said. “That’s the point. If this was all real and what you wanted, you wouldn’t have come back. The second you heard my name, you came running back.”

“To piss you off. And it’s working. I’m happier without you. And you can’t handle it. There’s no song you can write now, Neo. You can play the biggest concerts and sell a billion albums and it won’t make me happy or bring me back.”

Neo laughed. “You’re already here, babe. You called me tonight to hang out.”

“Fuck you,” I snapped.

The car ride fell silent.

I tried to quiet my heavy breathing.

When I glanced at Neo, I saw his right hand gripping the wheel so tight his knuckles were white.

We still had a long ride home.
